David C. Schonberg, Owner & Managing Member
David Cressend Schonberg was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and grew up in the quiet suburb of Luling, just south of the city. A graduate of Louisiana State University, David went on to achieve Masters of Business and Masters of Healthcare Administration degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans in 1994. He served as an intern for the Veterans Administration Hospital from 1993 – 1994. David relocated to Houston, Texas in 1994 and managed several properties simultaneously for Advanced Care Centers of America, helping them to achieve record-high occupancy and sales goals. This experience on the front lines at a variety of Assisted Living and senior care communities provided the firm foundation and the perspective that David needed to form his vision for what senior care—at its best—should be.
While strengthening his leadership and expertise in the senior care industry, David also grew his passion for real estate development, acquiring, renovating and selling a condominium complex in an up-and-coming New Orleans neighborhood in 2000. At the time, he was also initiating plans, researching markets and identifying investors and the ideal development, architectural and contractor team to help him realize his dream of marrying his passions of real estate development and Assisted Living.
The result was The Suites at Sugar Mill Point, the Houma, Louisiana area’s premier Assisted Living and Memory Care community. David and a group of local investors, contractors and architects broke ground in 2001 and the building began welcoming residents in October 2002. A pillar in the surrounding community, The Suites remains the flagship of the Schonberg company and the model from which David continues to grow and perfect his Assisted Living and Memory Care portfolio from its headquarters in Uptown New Orleans.
Shortly after The Suites began quickly filling its 36 beautifully-appointed units, Schonberg & Associates broke ground on another exemplary Assisted Living and Memory Care community—Alden Pointe in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It opened just months before Hurricane Katrina in June 2005, and—having seamlessly navigated the worst natural disaster on record in the region by maintaining unwavering care for each resident — has been serving residents in its three distinct “neighborhoods” and 36 apartments ever since.
With two successful properties under his belt, Schonberg focused on growing his business and diversifying geographically. Identifying growing communities on the outskirts of burgeoning metropolitan areas as the most sustainable markets for his model, David began researching properties for acquisition throughout the southeast. Taking over management of three existing South Carolina communities and bringing them up to the Schonberg operations model has been eye-opening and instrumental in further honing David’s expertise in the industry. The communities have all shown remarkable improvements in quality of care and resident satisfaction through the leadership of staff, building renovations, and improvements in nutritional and enrichment programs.
More recently, David Schonberg and the St. Charles Parish Hospital broke ground in fall 2011 on his sixth Assisted Living and Memory Care community in his hometown of Luling, Louisiana - Ashton Plantation Senior Living. Ashton Plantation Senior Living will be a state-of-the-art Assisted Living and Memory Care community beautifully landscaped on six acres in the Ashton Plantation subdivision. The 60 unit property will feature a secure Alzheimer's unit, a beautiful rotunda, a chapel, a theatre and even an ice cream parlor. Ashton Plantation is truly a spectacular project combining David's many years of experience in Assisted Living development and management. Simultaneously under construction is Vista Shores Assisted Living and Memory Care in New Orleans. The nostalgic former site of the Vista Shores country club, the property was also a senior living community prior to Hurricane Katrina, when it was flooded and left abandoned by the previous owners. Schonberg and Associates is breathing new and improved life into the future Schonberg senior community, with a full renovation underway and plans to open for business in spring 2012. Located on scenic Bayou St. John, Vista Shores will feature grand water views and spectacular outdoor recreational areas, a beauty parlor, and a comfortable Bistro where residents can enjoy the New Orleans cuisine they love.
Uniquely positioned as an expert in both the strategy behind developing and building top-notch Assisted Living and Memory Care communities and the day-to-day management and operations of these communities, David is not slowing down. Land sites for future developments in Louisiana and Mississippi have been scouted and additions and further improvements to existing properties are in the works.
David Schonberg resides in Uptown New Orleans with his wife, Kara, their daughters Ann and Margaret and their black lab, Lola.
